After-School Programs

Brearley's after-school programs support learning for Lower and Middle School students outside the classroom with a wide range of activities, from tae kwon do to musical theater to chess to STEM/STEAM and homework club.

Beaver Den

The Beaver Den is the Lower School after-school program for students in K-IV, and is offered Monday–Thursday. On Fridays, we have Play and Crafts, a longstanding Brearley class that mixes the learning of hands-on arts and crafts and opportunities for play with students from other classes and grades.

The Beaver Den is taught by a mix of outside teachers from around New York City and members of the Brearley faculty and staff. The program is intentionally tech-free and is focused on classes that are dedicated to the visual arts, music and movement.

Students are provided with a snack and are supervised before and after classes. Students in K-I attend classes from 3:15 to 4:00 pm, and students in II-IV attend classes from 4:15 to 5:00 pm. Extended Day is offered daily until 5:45 pm. There are opportunities to join the program throughout the school year and it’s run on a trimester basis with a fall, winter and spring session.

Examples of classes offered are tae kwon do, musical theater, chess, Beaver Den Strings Orchestra, sewing, Beaver Den Chorus, and many, many more!

Middle School Activities

Middle School Activities are optional and are scheduled on a trimester basis for students in Classes V-VIII. Students are encouraged to pursue their interests and/or try something new. All Class VII students are required to participate in the VII Gilbert and Sullivan rehearsals. All Class VIII students are required to work on the VIII Carnival planning and activities once a week.

Classes are taught by Brearley faculty and staff. The program is intentionally tech-free and is focused on classes that are dedicated to going beyond the school day's curriculum and allowing students to explore areas that they normally are not exposed to.

Class choices range from the visual arts to drama and music and to STEM/STEAM activities and also include a homework club. The Middle School Singers and the Middle School Orchestra perform throughout the school year.
