Financial Assistance Application Procedure for Applicants to The Brearley School For The Academic Year 2018-2019

There are several steps you must follow to apply to Brearley for financial assistance. Be assured that it is simpler than it may initially appear to be. A request for financial assistance must be made when the application for admission is submitted. The deadline for completing the application for aid is December 20, 2017 and it is essential that you adhere strictly to all deadlines.

STEP ONE: By November 20, 2017 please go to the website for School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS) at http://sss.nais.org and complete the Parents Financial Statement (PFS) online. You will be able to access the portal for the 2018-2019 school year as of October 2, 2017.

  • If parents are divorced, separated, or never married and living apart, each parent must file a separate PFS and supporting documents.
  • Brearley’s SSS code number is 1795. We suggest that you request a Family Report for yourself and retain a copy of all worksheets, your user name, password, and SSS identification number for your records.
STEP TWO: By December 10, 2017 please upload copies of the following documents to your SSS account.  You are encouraged to block out all social security numbers.

1. Both parents’ 2016 W-2 forms

2. Signed copies of your 2016 joint or separate Federal Income Tax Return including all schedules and supplements exactly as filed.  Business owners must also submit business tax returns.

3. Complete and upload to your SSS account Form 4506-T lines 1A through 6A and line 9 where you should request the years 2016 and 2017; sign but do not date the form. This form may be found online by clicking here.

STEP THREE: By December 20, 2017 please send a letter directly to the Financial Assistance Committee at the Brearley School explaining circumstances of which you would like the Committee to be aware. This is important as your other documents may not reflect your full need.

The Financial Assistance Committee reserves the right to consider the assets of both parents before making any award and cannot be bound by divorce agreements or the assertion that one parent has disclaimed responsibility for educational expenses. Losses shown by self-employed parents, business or rental property owners will be taken into consideration for three years only.

Financial assistance grants are included with letters of admission, however, there are two additional steps you will need to take in the spring to complete the financial assistance application.

STEP FOUR: By March 1, 2018 please upload or send copies of both parents’ 2017 W-2 forms to your SSS account.

STEP FIVE: By April 15, 2018 a copy of your entire joint or separate 2017 Federal Income Tax Return including all schedules and supplements exactly as filed must be uploaded or sent to your SSS account. Please file your federal income tax forms on time, since your application will not be complete without them. You may not file for an extension. No need based grant will be considered binding until the Financial Assistance Committee has received and reviewed this information.

The Financial Assistance Committee reserves the right to amend any award if the 2017 tax return does not accurately reflect the information provided on the PFS.

I will be happy to answer any questions you may have; please do not hesitate to call.

Sincerely,

Joan Kaplan
