Frequently Asked Questions

Lower School FAQs

List of 6 frequently asked questions.

  • Q. Do I need to call the day after Labor Day in order to receive an application to Brearley?

Not at all, since we do not limit the number of applications we process. In fact, you do not have to call at all but may fill out an application online.  Please note, however, that November 20 is the deadline for submitting an application.
  • Q. What is the birthday cutoff for Kindergarten applicants?

An applicant must turn five years old by September 1 of the year she enters Kindergarten. There are no exceptions. Our Kindergarten classes are comprised of children who range in age from five years old to those who turn six in the late summer or early fall.
  • Q. Do applicants come from a limited number of early childhood programs?

No. In a typical year, we receive applications from dozens of early childhood programs from many locations throughout the city and from neighboring suburbs. Applicants from last year’s pool represented over 125 early childhood programs.
  • Q. Do you ask for letters of recommendation?

No. Brearley does not want letters of recommendation.
  • Q. Is there an after-school program?

Yes. The Clubhouse is an after-school enrichment program organized by the Brearley and Chapin Schools for Kindergarten through Grade 5 that runs Monday through Thursday. There is also an Extended Day program from the end of Clubhouse until 5:45 pm. On Fridays, there is an optional after-school program that runs until 5:00 pm.
  • Q. Is the admission process different for siblings of enrolled students and for the children of alumnae?

Sibling and legacy parents are encouraged to contact the Office of Admission in the spring or in early September of the year before potential matriculation. Spring tours and parent interviews are available for these families. Additionally, a sibling or legacy family may opt for the Early Notification Plan, which requires submission of the application by October 1, 2018, and completion of the entire application file by November 30, 2018.  The Early Notification Financial Assistance application deadline is December 3, 2018.  A legacy candidate is a child whose mother attended The Brearley School.

Middle & Upper School FAQs

List of 5 frequently asked questions.

  • Q. Do you limit the number of applications you accept?

We do not limit the number of applications we accept. Please note, however, that November 20 is the deadline for submitting an application.
  • Q. Do applicants come from a limited number of sending schools?

In a typical year we receive applications from students attending a great variety of different public, charter, parochial and independent schools throughout the city and neighboring suburbs.
  • Q. How do I arrange for a tour of the school?

After submitting an application, you will receive an email inviting you to make an appointment for an individual tour.

The tour for applicants to Classes VI-X is for the applicant together with her parent(s) and is followed by a meeting with a member of the admission staff.

  • Q. Do you have an Open House?

All those who inquire about entry to Classes VI-X will receive an invitation to our Open House. The event is for students and parents and will take place on November 12, 2018. Since every applicant to these grades is given an individual tour of the School as part of the application process, the Open House serves primarily as an opportunity for students and their parents to speak with Brearley faculty and current students.
  • Q. What are the "entry points" into Brearley’s Middle and Upper Schools?

Brearley accepts applications to any grade in which a place is available; routine entry grades are Classes VI, VII and IX.

In a grade for which we do not anticipate any openings, we may accept applications to a Wait List or Letters of Interest. Should a space become available, the School will give full consideration to a Wait List application.
