Students from throughout the city participate in the Summer Interlude program.

Courses

Rhythmic Wake-Up Call
All instrumental students will gather daily in age-determined groups to explore foundations of elementary music theory and rhythm.

Jazz Ensemble
The jazz ensemble will rehearse in two consecutive periods each day to allow some students to elect one period of jazz ensemble and one period of chamber music. The jazz ensemble is designed to accommodate musicians of all abilities and performs as a cohesive unit at the final concert. We begin our study of improvisation through the blues and standards of the jazz repertoire.

Chamber Music
Each student will participate in two ensemble periods a day. A student may elect to be in jazz ensemble for one or two periods. Chamber music and small ensemble may be chosen for one period each.

Students will be placed in one or two different ensembles according to ability level and age. Placement auditions are required for all new instrumental students to match group participants. Each ensemble will have daily coaching with a faculty member and will prepare two works for the duration of the program. Students will develop the following skills in coaching sessions: ensemble etiquette, practicing and rehearsal techniques, listening skills, good group communication, resolving musical disagreements, musical phrasing and expression, overcoming technical challenges, and preparing for a performance. Music will be mailed in advance of the program start date and should be prepared in advance.

We believe that every one of these skills is applicable to all facets of a child's education. Thus the program is excellent training and enrichment for any academic curriculum, and indeed for the development of the individual as a whole.

Orchestra
All chamber music and jazz ensemble students participate in orchestra. This is an opportunity for the instrumentalists to come together in a larger ensemble setting. In addition to reinforcing skills taught in the chamber groups, the orchestra session will teach students how to play and listen as part of a section and will teach them about the importance of balance and group sound.

Simplified parts will be given to beginning students, who will be assigned to sectionals in the first few days, as needed. Repertoire in the past has included a variety of periods and styles.

Musical Theater Workshop
Students work on excerpts from a musical. Past musicals include South Pacific, The Sound of Music, The Music Man, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Anything Goes, Grease and Oliver. There will be the opportunity to audition for solos, duets and small group numbers.

Rock Band
This group affords each student the opportunity to work with popular music. All singers and instrumentalists are welcome! This band will collaborate with the Choral Program as well.
