THE DETAILS

With the School’s ever-evolving and extraordinary educational program to support each year, Brearley relies on sustained gifts for general operations and welcomes endowed funds for core needs, including tuition assistance. In addition, Brearley is seeking support for the facilities needed to enhance the well-being of students and teachers and to advance our academic and co-curricular programs.

After celebrating the completion of a partner schoolhouse at 590 East 83rd Street, which opened its doors to students in September 2019, Brearley continues fundraising to support the second vital phase of its campus plan: renovations to our historic schoolhouse at 610 East 83rd Street.

Unlike 590, which was funded through a combination of sources including generous gifts committed in this campaign, the cost of capital projects at 610 will be supported entirely through new gifts to the School, and the timing of each project will be contingent upon fundraising.

We invite you to join the effort or to expand your already significant support by making a meaningful contribution to the 610 Renovation Fund. Leadership pledges are typically paid over a few years, and naming opportunities are available for significant gifts. As a comprehensive campaign, all gifts for all purposes count toward the total amount raised in this community-wide effort.

To discuss a multiyear pledge and to learn more about the transformative plans for 610, please contact Development & Alumnae Relations.

Our goals are based on "Opening Doors," our Strategic Vision which was adopted by the Board of Trustees in October 2014, and which describes our aspirations and provides a roadmap for the future.

We encourage all of Brearley's generous champions to make the School a philanthropic priority. This campaign will take all of us!

Philanthropy

610 RENOVATION FUND
Brearley is seeking philanthropic support to renovate our historic schoolhouse at 610 East 83rd Street.  The renovations will occur one project at a time, during the summers, and the timing of each project will depend on fundraising.

The first project planned is a new Middle and Upper School Library, which will move from the first to the 10th floor. The new location will offer splendid natural light and river views, and the substantial increase in square footage will allow for more study areas, a dedicated seminar room and abundant adjustable shelving for easier book access.

Gifts to the 610 Renovation Fund are vital to Brearley’s continued success in meeting the School’s long-standing need for expanded and reconfigured educational space. Together, we can meaningfully optimize our facilities to match the power of a Brearley education and enhance the well-being of our students and teachers.

ANNUAL FUND
Gifts made through the Brearley Annual Fund support the day-to-day operations of the School, from teacher salaries and financial aid, to field trips and text books. The Annual Fund provides more than 10% of each year’s operating budget. Parent and alumnae volunteers contact their peers each year to ask for and encourage Annual Fund gifts. The Annual Fund closes on June 30, and Brearley is grateful to the 99% of parents and 43% of alumnae who give generously each year.

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION BENEFIT
The Brearley Parents’ Association organizes an annual Benefit to celebrate our community and to raise funds for the School. Contributions in excess of event costs support a specific operational need. PA volunteers seek leadership underwriting gifts and sell tickets. Discounted tickets for current families receiving financial assistance enable all to attend if they would like.

CLASS XII GIFT
Each fall, Class XII students select a priority funding need and collaborate to give back to their school. Student co-chairs ask their peers to make their own gifts, and parent volunteers rally fellow Class XII parents to honor their children’s achievements with their philanthropic support, in lieu of an Annual Fund gift. We are grateful for strong participation from Class XII students and their families.

ENDOWMENT GIFTS
Generations of alumnae, parents and friends have strengthened Brearley’s legacy with endowment gifts. Endowed funds are invested for the long term and provide income that supports core needs as well as specific educational programs. Gifts through bequests, trusts or retirement plans are often directed to the endowment. The Samuel Brearley Society recognizes people who have included Brearley in their estate plans.
