A Vital Mission
By offering its students a firm grounding in the finest liberal arts tradition, complemented by education in the arts and athletics and enhanced by opportunities to engage with other cultures and perspectives, the Brearley School continues to uphold the original mission of its founder, preparing girls exceptionally well for active and responsible citizenship in an increasingly borderless world. Gifts to Brearley support this important work, so that each donor’s gift in effect becomes a vehicle for changing and improving the world through the life’s contributions of the talented young women educated at the School.
Our donors have varied and individual motivations for giving to Brearley. Some choose to support specific programs such as faculty compensation, financial assistance, an academic discipline or the School’s facilities and technology. Others prefer to give the School money without any restriction as to its use, offering Brearley’s leadership the flexibility they need to respond as challenges and opportunities arise.
Many donors see their gifts to Brearley as “giving back.” They see supporting the School through a charitable gift as a way of expressing gratitude for the ways in which Brearley has prepared them, or their daughters or granddaughters, to meet their goals with competence and confidence throughout a lifetime. Still others mean their gift to affirm that Brearley is a worthy partner in their own ambition to make a difference in the world: the School embodies and perpetuates values that they share.
From its founding in 1884, Brearley has benefited from the strong financial support of its community, enabling the School to remain true to its historical mission while evolving to address today’s needs. We are deeply grateful to the many alumnae, parents, parents of alumnae, grandparents and friends of the School who have offered their time, expertise and extraordinary financial support over many decades to support the work of Brearley’s faculty and students.
