Frequently Asked Questions
Lower School
- Do I need to call the day after Labor Day in order to receive an application to Brearley?
Not at all, since we do not limit the number of applications we send out. In fact, the phone lines are often busy right after Labor Day, so we suggest that you call a little later in September or fill out an inquiry form online.
- What is the birthday cutoff for Kindergarten applicants?
An applicant must turn five years by September 1 of the year she enters Kindergarten. Our Kindergarten classes are comprised of children who range in age from five-year-olds to those who are turning six in the late summer or early fall.
- Do applicants come from a limited number of early childhood programs?
No. In a typical year, we receive applications from dozens of early childhood programs from many locations throughout the city and from neighboring suburbs. Applicants from last year’s pool represented over one hundred early childhood programs.
- Do you ask for letters of recommendation?
No. Brearley does not want letters of recommendation.
- Is there an after-school program?
Yes. The Clubhouse is an after-school enrichment program organized by the Brearley and Chapin Schools for Kindergarten through Class VI. There is also an Extended Day program from the end of Clubhouse until 5:45 p.m. as well as an optional after-school program on Fridays.
- Do you have spring tours?
We do not have spring tours for regular applicant families.
- Is the admission process different for siblings of enrolled students and for the children of alumnae?
Sibling and legacy parents are encouraged to contact the Office of Admission in the spring or early fall of the year before potential matriculation. Spring tours and parent interviews are available for these families. Additionally, a sibling or legacy family may opt for Early Notification, which requires completion of the entire application by December 1, 2007. A legacy candidate is a child whose mother attended the Brearley School.
