Upper School
Brearley’s Upper School represents the final stage in a program that develops a student’s confidence in herself and in her growing skills in a range of disciplines. The focus of the Upper School years is a rich and vigorous academic, athletic and artistic curriculum, centered in a strong community that supports students in their self-discovery and produces resourceful young women who are prepared to find their places in the world outside of Brearley. In addition to the academic courses, which prepare them for any AP exams they may wish to take, Upper School students may pursue their interests beyond the regular curriculum through activities in the arts, robotics and engineering, mathematics, publications, community service and other areas of interest; additional opportunities include internships in labs, independent studies with faculty and courses with students from other schools, in the city or in programs outside of New York.
Brearley students have a choice of more than thirty extracurricular and cocurricular groups to join. Whether it is to focus on the world outside of Brearley or to take photography, ceramics, participate in dramatic productions or play in chamber music ensembles, students have a broad set of activity choices. Those interested in public policy and government may participate in the Model U.N. and Congress programs. Students interested in science may be admitted to the Columbia Science Honors Program or seek out internships in labs as part of their science studies; they may also participate in the math and robotics clubs or join the Interschool advanced math course as seniors.
